ITS World Congress only comes to the US once every three years. In their most recent stateside trip, they chose Detroit – and for good reason. Detroit is more than the Motor City. Yes, this region is the home to the “Big 3”, but it also contains one of the highest concentrations of engineers, software developers and business development professionals in the world.
Here in Midtown Detroit, NextEnergy is nestled in the heart of Mayor Duggan’s recently announced Detroit Innovation District. And our campus was granted the honor of being selected as one of three ITS World Congress Technology Showcase Demonstration sites. And what a week we had.
Several hundred guests joined us to experience vehicle-to-home, vehicle-to-building, wireless charging and pedestrian avoidance technology demonstrations. For NextEnergy, this was also a unique opportunity to showcase our three acre campus, which includes three microgrids, an alternative fuels platform, a direct current connected residential home, ten electric vehicle charging stations, eight technology acceleration labs, and state-of-the-art convening spaces.
In all, ITS World Congress – the signature event of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America – brought over 10,000 transportation policymakers, researchers, high-tech innovators, and business professionals to Detroit, highlighting the importance of Michigan in all things transportation, software development and connectivity.
As stated in a letter from ITS World Congress organizing committee chairman, Jim Barbaresso, and president & CEO of ITS America, Scott Belcher, “More than any Intelligent Transport meeting we’ve ever held, the World Congress in Detroit will connect our past with our future.” And NextEnergy, one of the nation’s leading accelerators of advanced energy and transportation technologies, together with our partners, is driving innovation into that future.
For those who couldn’t join us, below is an overview of our week.
Smart Connected Vehicles
NextEnergy partnered with Chrysler Group LLC to showcase two technology demonstrations. Using a modified Fiat 500e electric vehicle, the vehicle-to-home demonstration highlighted how an electric vehicle can “talk” to its owner and connect with the home. The vehicle-to-building demonstration showcased how a building owner could use a fleet of electric vehicles as a secondary power source to save money. NextEnergy’s relationship with Chrysler began in 2012 and we continue to look toward solutions that envision the vehicle as part of a larger ecosystem. Click here for more information.
Wireless Automotive Technology Solutions
The Qualcomm team showcased the Qualcomm VIP demo car featuring Qualcomm Halo™ Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging technology and the benefits of vehicle-to-pedestrian communications systems using Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) technologies to help reduce collisions.
