DTE Energy broke ground Tuesday for a 1.5-acre public park to energize the western edge of downtown Detroit. The park will serve as a vibrant green space to anchor the emerging neighborhood, spur economic development and provide a spot for residents, visitors and employees to gather, play, eat and enjoy entertainment.
DTE will work with the Downtown Detroit Partnership to develop park programming to attract visitors of all ages. The central lawn will include:
A multiuse, oval green space for outdoor, programmed activities, including team sports, and intimate walking paths and areas to sit, relax and recharge.
A “roll-in” stage for performances, concerts and other programming.
Two areas for local food truck vendors to sell food.
Parking for bicycles.
The park is scheduled for completion next year. DTE will hold a crowd-sourcing campaign closer to the grand opening to solicit suggestions from the community for a name for the park.
