As a leader in the field of bariatric medicine, Dr. Garth Davis, MD was again recently recognized as a Texas Monthly Super Doc and stars with his father, Dr. Robert Davis, on the hit show docu-reality medical series, BIG MEDICINE. His recently published bestseller, Proteinaholic is available in bookstores nationwide.
Dr. Garth Davis, MD graduated top 10% of is class at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, and did his surgical residency at the University of Michigan. While in Michigan, Dr. Davis underwent extensive training in general surgical disciplines, specializing in laparoscopic procedures. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Davis is a recognized expert in initial bariatric procedures, surgery, and is frequently asked to give lectures to both patient and physician audiences alike.
Although Dr. Davis is nationally-known as a bariatric surgeon, he now advocates the use of the plant based diet against obesity, and to help people achieve optimal health and weight management.
The doctor became his own patient. At the time, he was suffering from high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a fatty liver. He was headed towards a future plagued by obesity and chronic illness. Yet not surprising given the demanding hours of the surgeon lifestyle, lack of exercise, a preference for salty, fatty foods, and the convenience of fast food options in the hospital cafeteria.
He adopted a very low carb, low to no fruit, high protein diet and it failed him, like it has failed so many others! He knew there had to be a better solution. And his patients needed help beyond knee-jerk surgery. Finally ready for a personal change, he took it upon himself to research nutrition.
Adopting a plant-based lifestyle absolutely revolutionized his health beyond what he could have imagined. Not only did he drop the weight, all of his blood markers normalized. His allergies vanished. His sleep improved, his energy levels skyrocketed and he got off his statin medications.
In his latest book, Proteinaholic, Dr. Garth Davis as a doctor who runs a large surgical and medical weight-loss clinic in Houston, is on the front lines of the battle against obesity. “I witness daily the negative impact of the so-called experts’ ill-designed diet plans as patients come to my office in dire need of help, having tried all the famous high-protein diet plans multiple times,” states Dr. Davis. “I have treated thousands of people for obesity and obesity-related disorders, and I have learned what works and what doesn’t.” In Dr. Davis new book he outlines, what doesn’t work is massive amounts of animal protein. Davis states what does work is a plant-based diet—not necessarily vegan, but featuring far smaller amounts of animal foods—with the vast majority of calories coming gain. Most meat contains antibiotics, which lead to weight gain. In other words, the exact opposite of the diets his obese patients follow before they come to see him.
Dr. Davis own quest led him down a deep research hole to identify the ultimate human diet to maximize and maintain weight loss; optimize human health; and prevent (and even reverse) lifestyle disease both for himself and his patients.
