The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has opened three job postings for Workplace Safety Representatives (WSR). The positions are in Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph Counties; Oakland County; and Wayne County respectively. A WSR (Safety Officer) inspects workplaces for compliance with occupational safety regulations. These are permanent, full-time positions. Candidates seeking a career in Michigan civil service are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in any major. As an alternative to a bachelor’s degree, the candidate must have an educational level typically acquired through completion of high school, AND 1) One year of responsibility for workplace safety in a general industry environment, or, 2) One year of experience investigating/inspecting industrial plants for compliance with occupational safety standards. It is helpful if the candidate has spent several years operating and/or repairing machines or equipment in an industrial setting.
These WSR postings close on June 14, 2017. Applicants must create an account at the jobs website and should attach a resume and copy of their college transcripts. If this is the first time you are using the State of Michigan online job application system, you will need to create an account and select a Username and Password. After your account is established, you can build an application.
The salary range is $19.50 per hour to $30.04 per hour. Starting salary corresponds to college degree and prior experience. Employees advance through the levels and grades until they reach the maximum of the pay scale. Qualified employees can receive a promotion to a WSR 12, which is a senior WSR, with a salary range of $22.37 per hour to $32.11 per hour.
The benefit package includes health, life, vision, and dental insurance; sick leave; vacation leave; alternative work schedules; tax-deferred retirement investment program (401(k)/457); up to a 7% state match towards the retirement fund; and the option to purchase other benefits such as long-term disability insurance. The WSR’s are assigned a state vehicle for work use which must be parked in their assigned county.
The WSR’s work out of their home. During the initial training and orientation period that can last up to six months, the WSR’s will spend a considerable proportion of the work week in travel status in Lansing and other areas across the state.
