On Sundays I will now be offering you small steps that can have big impact on your health …
We began last week with “Simple Ingredients for a Better Life” – this is where you can begin your Health Hero journey by adding in small, simple steps that can have great impact on your life – and health.
What does it mean to be a health hero? Is it running five miles a day and eating a pound of greens? Is it practicing meditation daily and never having a stressful day? Of course not. Now if that IS your reality, I applaud you.
But if you struggle, like we all do at times, with an overwhelming schedule, trying to find time to squeeze in a workout, or working to create healthy meals with your family, I get it.
So I am excited to launch “Small Step Sunday!”
To make this effort easier, I have worked with a great online specialty store, Thrive Market, to create Dr. Nandi’s Pantry. Thrive is a place where you can get delicious organic foods at an affordable place, and in Dr. Nandi’s Pantry, ALL of the items are #HealthHero approved, to make your exploration and choices easy.
(And check out my recipe for Turmeric Tea!)
Boil 4 cups of water before adding one teaspoon of turmeric. Turn the heat down and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and then cool for 5 minutes.
Before you make a cup of tea, I’d like to share my prescriptions:
- Look for turmeric products that are standardized to 95 percent curcuminoids. Dr. Nandi’s Pantry on Thrive Market has the perfect kind. If you’re buying actual turmeric root, you can find it in the produce section – be sure to peel off the skin before grating.
- There is no specific recommended daily intake for turmeric. But 400 to 600 milligrams of pure turmeric powder three times a day, or 1 to 3 grams of grated or dried turmeric root a day is generally recommended for adults.
- Turmeric is generally safe when used appropriately but can have side effects if taken in large doses. You could experience acid reflux, low blood sugar, indigestion, diarrhea or nausea.
- Add flavor to your turmeric tea. Ginger, honey, lemon, or lime can be used to sweeten and improve the taste. I have made sure to put a great choice in honey in Dr. Nandi’s Pantry.
To help your body absorb curcumin, try adding a healthy fat like whole milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. You can also spice up your tea with black pepper which promotes absorption.
