RecoveryPark is a collaborative effort by a number of non-profit and for-profit groups within the Detroit region. The focus of this collaboration is to drive sustainable neighborhood economic recovery based on agri-business. RecoveryPark is being developed as a job creation engine providing jobs throughout the entire food production value chain. This value chain is based on food grown in an urban farming setting within the Detroit region. Urban farming within the Detroit region will lead to the renewal of abandoned and blighted urban properties that would otherwise continue to decay.
The RecoveryPark is being driven by Self Help Addiction Rehabilitation (SHAR), a Detroit-based Therapeutic Community (TC) established in 1969. SHAR’s mission is to transform individuals with addiction and co-occurring disorders into recovering people, capable of living a full and productive life.

Our commitment to working toward an environmentally sound future is evident in our rooftop projects. We have completed a number of rooftop gardens in the Metro Detroit area and have found these projects to benefit the environment on several levels. Please see below our explanation on rooftop gardens.
Rooftop Gardens
We would like to point out the advantages to rooftop gardens. The first and foremost advantage is the ability to utilize the roof area as a habitual space. It provides architects and building owners with an opportunity to create living space on an area of the facility that is often neglected real estate. This transforms the roof area from an asphalt surfaced wasteland of abandoned water tanks, rusty air-conditioning units, and a depository of trash into a scenic aerial garden which can be enjoyed by building occupants as premium living space and for convenient outdoor recreation. In this type of construction the rooftop is virtually transposed into a valuable amenity that enhances the worth of the building that it occupies.
Rooftop gardens also provide significant environmental advantages. In addition to their aesthetic benefits, roof gardens can help improve the environment by maintaining a healthy ecosystem and improving air quality. It is a well-established fact that plants maintain air quality by “absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen via photosynthesis, plants recharge the atmosphere that enables all animal life, including human life, to exist.” This is particularly beneficial in urban areas, which lack the forests, farms and lawns that provide these tasks in rural and suburban areas.
As the installation rate of rooftop gardens in the United States increases, it will become important that roofing and waterproofing designers become familiar with the components and installation procedures. The garden assembly can be applied in a cost effective manner if the designer keeps the design ‘simple’. The success ratio of rooftop garden assemblies in the United States that are over fifty years old certifies that these systems can be both ascetically pleasing and waterproof.

SOCRRA is a municipal corporation founded in the early ’50s. SOCRRA consists of twelve member municipalities with a total population of approximately 283,000 and covers an area of 75 square miles.
Member cities are Berkley, Beverly Hills, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak and Troy.
SOCRRA is governed by a twelve member Board of Trustees, one member representing each of the constituent municipalities. Member voting power is based on individual member municipality refuse tonnage delivered to the Authority’s facilities.
SOCRRA operates a Transfer Station in Troy (on Coolidge north of 14 Mile) and a compost site in Rochester Hills. The Troy facility receives and compacts the mixed municipal solid waste for transfer to a private landfill for disposal.
SOCRRA also operates a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on Coolidge north of 14 Mile that receives recyclable materials collected at curbside by the member municipalities. These recyclables are delivered to the MRF where the material is weighed and placed on the various processing conveyors for further sorting and baling for shipment to markets. The MRF is designed to process 100 tons per day in an eight hour shift, or 26,000 tons per year.
SOCRRA has ongoing recycling education outreach programs including group tours of the Material Recovery Facility and Recycling 101 Workshops. SOCRRA has sponsored a Recycling Jamboree which educates the public on reducing, reusing and recycling with emphasis on how to prepare recyclables for set out at curbside.
Through SOCWA’s Healthy Lawn and Garden Program, the Authority is actively involved in community outreach efforts to educate the public about practical methods for reducing yard waste, protecting water quality and using compost. Recommended practices are identified in partnership with the Oakland County MSU Extension, Wayne County MSU Extension, and the Metropolitan Detroit Landscape Association.
With volunteer support from SOCRRA’s Master Composters, SOCRRA sponsors Master Composter training, public workshops, healthy garden tours, garbage-can composting in the schools, educational programs at SOCRRA Gardens, lawn care clinics, soil nutrient testing, seminars for retailers and outreach at a wide range of community events.

Rauhorn Electric’s mission is to promote leadership in improving the safety and efficiency of all aspects of public interests.
Additional Information
Energy consumption and environmental sustainability is a key concern our nation is facing. The future of our environment relies solely on the decisions and choices we currently choose. Since 1980, Rauhorn Electric’s mission has continued to promote leadership in improving the safety and efficiency of all aspects of public interests.
Building green goes much beyond Rauhorn Electric’s involvement with the installation of solar and wind farms. There are many other concepts and technologies that are involved in decreasing our dependence on energy. LED lighting, for example, has been growing in popularity, and is being used in many locations. Having a short payback period, LEDs applications are being used in everything from parking lot lighting, traffic lights, to airport lighting. Photocells also help to manage energy consumption so lights only remain on during night hours and low visibility. Intelligent traffic systems are also being employed all over the Metro Detroit area, as well as other regions. These systems not only record historical data but are capable of making decisions per intersection to help the flow of traffic, decreasing wait time and the amount of fuel used. Directional Boring is one of Rauhorn Electric’s many specialties. Directional boring is a method of installing conduits underground with little impact on the surrounding landscape; this is unlike trenching or excavation, which can substantially disrupt a large area of land.
With the rapid development of new and green technologies, Rauhorn Electric has continued to stay a leader in implementing these advances into today’s electrical infrastructure. In the end, this benefits both our client’s investments and the earth’s environment.
