Henry Ford College Hosts Student Political Issues Convention on Oct. 7

Henry-Ford-Logo-Blue- logoHenry Ford College holds its 14th Annual Michigan Student Political Issues Convention on Friday, Oct. 7, giving students the opportunity to speak about current political issues with many political leaders, including Congresswoman Debbie Dingell. 

 With the 2016 Presidential Election counting down, Henry Ford College (HFC) and the League of Women Voters (LMV) of Dearborn–Dearborn Heights will host the 14th Annual Michigan Student Political Issues Convention on Friday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event takes place on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC, Building L on the main campus).

One purpose of this convention is to reverse the trends in the lack of political engagement and voter apathy among young voters. Research shows that there continues to be a dramatic decline in youth political participation in every category, which poses a threat to the democratic process, especially in this election year. If citizens fail to become politically engaged by their mid-20s, studies show that they will not become politically engaged whatsoever.More

Students Across Michigan Celebrate 20 Years of Walking And Biking To School

mdotMore than 300 schools in Michigan will join students around the country to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Walk to School Day. Thousands of Michigan students, along with their parents, teachers and community leaders, are expected to participate.

“Walk to School Day is a simple way for schools to encourage students and parents to walk to school. This event is a great first step in planning Safe Routes to School activities and helps schools initiate and reinforce a permanent culture of walking and biking among students,” said Meg Thomas-Ackerman, the Michigan Fitness Foundation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) director. “The Michigan Fitness Foundation is thrilled to partner with MDOT to help make Michigan one of the states with the most schools participating in Walk to School Day.”More

Ossian Law Updates on Data Breach Costs

Ossian LawKaspersky Labs has issued its annual report on “Measuring the Financial Impact of IT Security on Businesses” after surveying more than 4,000 business representatives from 25 different countries. Some key findings of the report:

  • The cost of a single security incident for small to medium businesses averages over $86,000 and for large businesses over $860.000
  • In the past twelve months, thirty-eight percent of the businesses surveyed had experienced a virus or malware incident causing lost productivity
  • Thirty-six percent of responding businesses had experienced inappropriate use of IT resources by employees in the past year
  • The bulk of the cost for responding to a security incident comes in the form of additional internal staff wages, followed by lost business (for small to medium businesses) and damage to credit rating or increased insurance premiums (for large businesses)
  • The longer the business takes to react and respond to a security incident, the greater the financial impact will be.
