Detroit Swims expands to offer free swim lessons and water safety days this summer on Belle Isle
The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit encourages children and parents in the city and surrounding area to explore the many benefits of swimming, while also keeping safety top of mind. On June 20, a new partnership will help many Detroit families do just that by offering free swim lessons through Detroit Swims and Water Safety Days on Belle Isle.More

Imagine this: Jerry is a successful, 34-year-old owner of a sporting goods store, married with three young children. At first glance the plastic container looks similar to a lunch box. It’s tupperware with two latches connecting the top, a small indent on the lid and enough width and depth inside to hold more than just a sandwich. However, the content in this container is not a sandwich. Instead, it’s three double AA batteries, a small circuit, resistors and wires connected to broken solar cells on the lid and the result is solar powered light for those living in dire rural conditions without electricity.
