MDEQ awards $2.5 million for scrap tire market development and law enforcement

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) announced today the funding of $2,516,756 in grants to develop new uses for used vehicle tires and to support increased law enforcement activities within the city of Detroit.  When illegal dumping in the environment occurs, scrap tires pose both a fire hazard and a human health risk as a mosquito breeding ground. These grants help reduce or eliminate instances of illegal dumping, support proper collection and handling, and begin to define scrap tires as a commodity, rather than a waste material.  These scrap tire grants support building sustainable markets for recycled tire materials in Michigan. Grants have traditionally included support for essential equipment and materials that aid in the establishment of new markets, including various manufacturing processes, implementation and testing of paving materials, energy generation, and other innovative approaches.  These grants contribute to a more sustainable business model for the scrap tire industry through increased market opportunities for scrap tire processors, end users, and manufacturers. DEQ Issues Second violation Notice To Air Force For Lagging PFAS Clean-Up At Wurtsmith

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) today issued the U.S. Air Force with a violation notice for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in the waters of Clark’s Marsh near Oscoda. The PFAS contamination was caused by the use of firefighting foam at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base (WAFB) bordering the marsh. This is the second violation notice issued to the Air Force this year.More

State Establishes Mutual Agreement With Georgia-Pacific On Parchment PFAS Investigation

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will be working closely with Georgia-Pacific LLC (GP) to identify the source(s) of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substanstances (PFAS) contamination that affected the city of Parchment’s water supply and private drinking water wells in Cooper Township.  The city wells and some of the private wells were found to contain high levels of PFAS in July as part of the state-wide initiative to test all public water supplies for this emerging family of chemicals. Alternate water sources were obtained while local and state officials worked to ensure the health of the public.More

Background:
Torch Lake Industries, Inc. is requesting a permit to mechanically and/or hydraulically dredge an estimated 33,528,422 cubic yards of stamp sands waterward of the ordinary high water mark of Lake Superior in Stanton Township, Houghton County (extending from the Graveraet River approximately 13 miles northeast to the North Portage Entry). The company applied for a Great Lakes Submerged Lands permit (under Part 325 of Michigan’s NREPA, 1994 PA 451) in October of 2015 with MDEQ’s Water Resources Division.
Written public comments that pertain to the proposed Lake Superior submerged lands project are being accepted by MDEQ through May 11, 2018. Comments may be submitted online through MiWaters or by mail to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Upper Peninsula District Office, 1504 W Washington Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
Please note this information session and hearing pertain to Stanton Township stamp sands only. These meetings will not address projects proposed in other stamp sand areas.

DEQ Stormwater Updates for May 2018

Each of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Water Resources Division (WRD), storm water programs (Construction, Industrial, and Municipal) has a long-standing committee consisting of staff members involved with implementing the program.  Committee members include a representative from each district office who oversees compliance and enforcement of the storm water program and central staff involved with permitting and enforcement activities.  The committees meet periodically throughout the year to discuss program implementation and consistency.  These committee meetings also serve to learn of program challenges, solutions, and innovative approaches throughout the state. More
