FLINT, Mich. The city of Flint’s water system has tested well below action levels of the federal Lead and Copper Rule for the third consecutive 6-month monitoring period.
Comments Sought for Aquila Back Forty Wetlands, Lake and Streams Application
LANSING, Mich. Aquila Resources, Inc. is proposing the development of a polymetallic zinc, copper and gold mine in Lake Township, Menominee County. Aquila applied for a Wetlands, Lakes and Streams permit in Jan. 2017 and has been working with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to provide additional details on the proposed project. The DEQ Water Resources Division has received additional information from the applicant and has determined that Aquila’s application for permit is administratively complete. The application is on public notice and the department is soliciting comments that pertain to the proposed impacts to wetlands and streams.
Hamburg Township Brownfield Redevelopment Authority awarded assessment grant and loan for redevelopment
LANSING, MICH. A contaminated industrial property in Hamburg Township will be returned to productive use with help from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). A $205,000 grant and a $425,000 loan were awarded to the Hamburg Township Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA) to address environmental contamination at the former Hoskins Manufacturing Inc. site located on Hall Road.

MDEQ’s Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program Innovates with RadResponder
The MDEQ Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) Unit is responsible for training for and responding to disasters involving radioactive materials. With five physicists based in Lansing, they are the group responsible for coordinating the collection of field data and analyzing it to make safety recommendations.
As part of this work, the MDEQ REP Unit has become a leader in the national REP community’s efforts to integrate RadResponder-a comprehensive data management system-into radiological emergency response. David Skutt and Todd Trygier have led the DEQ’s adoption of RadResponder and have leveraged its capabilities with a wealth of additional technology to maximize its utility. They’ve been very involved in field testing the RadResponder Windows app, with over 20,000 data points taken since late September 2016, most of which have been collected around each of the three commercial nuclear power plants in the state.
