To help address the opioid epidemic affecting the state, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) hosted a statewide conference for 150 public safety and public health professionals today, April 17.
The Public Safety and Public Health Opioid Conference in Lansing featured state and national experts discussing the issues of addiction, law enforcement practices, naloxone use and first responder precautions. Best practices were shared, including presentations from Monroe and Macomb counties. Participants also had opportunities to collaborate with stakeholders from across the state.
“This conference is a strong step towards helping our communities work together to fight the opioid epidemic,” said Nick Lyon, MDHHS director. “By sharing lessons learned and best practices, we will continue to address this public health threat with a united front in the most effective ways possible.”

Similar to the rest of the nation, Michigan has seen a dramatic increase in opioid-related deaths. From 1999 to 2016, 7,300 people have died from an opioid overdose with more than 60 percent of those deaths occurring since 2010.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Education, announces the release of a valuable new tool to support student health.
The Michigan Model for Early Childhood Health™ provides early childhood educators with age-appropriate health promoting activities. The early childhood module complements the K-12 modules of the nationally recognized Michigan Model for Health™ curriculum, and provides an emphasis on family involvement.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has issued a Request for Proposal for community organizations to provide residential lead hazard control services to Medicaid-enrolled residents.
Grants up to $1.5 million are available for qualifying cities, counties, consortiums or non-profit organizations to provide lead hazard control services. The Healthy Homes Section of MDHHS hopes to fund up to two grantees to provide these services in Michigan communities.
Services available for funding under this initiative include, but are not limited to, the following:
Creation and maintenance of an Enrollee Engagement Plan, including targeted outreach and promotion of covered services to prioritized Medicaid-enrolled residents.
Preparation, lead inspection, risk assessment and/or elevated blood lead investigation and lab sampling analysis activities to determine the presence of lead hazards.
Abatement or interim controls, where necessary, of lead-based paint and lead dust hazards from an eligible residence.
Removal or covering of soil lead hazards up to the eligible residence property line.
Lead in water sampling and plumbing abatement per MDHHS Residential Lead Hazard Control-Lead in Water Protocol.
Minimal rehabilitation to the extent the work will extend the life of lead abatement work.
Temporary relocation of residents during lead abatement activities, when appropriate.
Building local workforce capacity to safely and effectively abate lead hazards.
Grant applications must be submitted electronically through the MI E-Grants program by May 15, 2018 at 3 p.m. The program period begins Oct. 1, 2018 and ends Sept. 30, 2019.

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in Flint and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are announcing the upcoming schedule for mobile food pantry stops to distribute foods rich in calcium, vitamin C and iron. Families in March will receive produce that includes apples and potatoes.More

The result of this analysis showed no significant differences in birth outcomes for the City of Flint when comparing the pre and post water change time periods.More
