New Instructor- Torri Ashford

We don’t know if you know this… But our instructors are like unicorns- unique and basically magical. They have lots of classroom experience, most have experience in teaching STEM outside of Arts & Scraps and all have some background in creative process or making. In addition, each of them have their own talents and personalities that bring a wonderful flavor to each and every program. Torri Ashford, the newest member of our instructor team, is no exception! Torri comes to us from other wonderful Detroit non-profits. In addition to being part of our team, she also works at Living Arts and PuppetART! If you see her around, please welcome her to the team.

New Volunteer Committee Opportunities

stationsAt Arts & Scraps, we believe that YOU make it magic. We know that we cannot do what we do without the strength of our volunteers. Each year, over 12,000 hours of volunteer work is donated, and we are looking to harness all of your love and support to help us grow. Because of that, we are expanding our volunteer options to include long-term opportunities. We are always looking for Board Members, but we also know that some are not able to become that involved, but still have more to give than coming once or twice.

Do you want to volunteer at the warehouse?  Groups of youth to seniors, (up to 20 people) can visit our private warehouse at their convenience to prep materials, assemble kits. Contact Trice with questions or call her at 313-640-9050.

Serving Every 6th Grader in Detroit Public Schools Community District with Rock Ventures Days of Innovation

Rock Ventures has set the goal to reach every DPSCD 6th grader this year. This fall, we are beginning by working with 1500 students over 10 weeks. Each student will interact with Arts & Scraps, The Parade Company, Robot Garage and get a tour of the Quicken Loans family of offices. Each non-profit is teaching a different lesson on innovative thinking and how that can build into a career. The day is focused on helping DPSCD students see themselves in a STEM or innovation-related career someday. We are honored to have been part of the pilot and thrilled that the project is continuing.

Volunteers Needed!

We are still looking for volunteers for our new committees. If you love Arts & Scraps and want to help us grow in meaningful ways, we would love to work with you! Give your time and talent while joining a community of others who want to do the same. To check our our offerings, go to our Volunteer Match page to learn more.

Oppertunities include Stations Committee (coming up with new interactive stations for our classroom and events), Friends of Arts & Scraps (General help when we need it, project-based group work) and the Marketing and PR Committee (which will help insure that the word gets out about all we do!). ANNOUNCING: Arts & Scrap’s New Exec. Director, James Henderson

gd-logo-arts-and-scrapsMr. Henderson brings great experience in education, community building, administration and development. Send him a welcome and read the article about him in Crain’s Business.

James Henderson is a graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Education. He has been a teacher and served as a principal and superintendent at a public school academy in Lansing, Michigan. He worked for the state nonprofit association for public school academies as a quality schools facilitator working with school leaders and teachers.

James later went on to serve as the vice president of a nonprofit center in Detroit dedicated to supporting and developing quality public school academies in the city and quality outcomes for all students. James believes strongly in the mission of Arts & Scraps, and reimaging recycled materials to inspire people of all ages to think, create and learn.More
