On Thursday, January 30^th at Detroit Unity Temple in Detroit, Detroit 2030 District held its first event of the year with its House of Worship Green Team members. Presentations were made to a packed house of attendees eager to learn about saving on energy, water, stormwater while improving our environment in Detroit. The event included a networking session with lunch and three speakers opining on current opportunities for improving the building operations of houses of worship in Detroit.

Heroes of the Revolution

Former Detroit Free Press photographer, Douglas Elbinger will have his first exhibit in Detroit in over thirty years. The photographic portraits on display at the Fourteen East during the month of May are a selection of images from his virtual gallery which you can view and share at this link Heroes of the Revolution. Photographs include rare images of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and many Detroiters you will recognize.
Douglas Elbinger has been making photographs since the age of 14. Doug’s career began as an assistant to the legendary Detroit Free Press ‘chief’ photographer Tony Spina. While still in high school he photographed the Beatles on stage with them during their August 1966 concert in Detroit. Since then Doug has traveled the world seeking interesting people and places to photograph. Highlights from his early photo-journalism career include Robert F Kennedy’s presidential campaign and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. For over fifty years, Elbingers’ photos have appeared in countless books, magazines, newspapers, annual reports, album covers, trade journals, catalogs, and web sites. People everywhere count on Doug to “put them in a good light”.

District Detroit Doubles Down On Residential Development

Not too long ago in Detroit it was BIG NEWS to hear any announcement of residential development. Friday’s announcement at District Detroit raised the bar with plans to build 700 residential units across six new redevelopment and ground up construction projects. These projects are expected to rent out quickly due to increased housing demand along the Woodward corridor.

Jerry Kreuger, President of American Community Developers (ACD), spoke about their company’s unique opportunity to develop residential units in the most dense sports venue in the entire country. No other city has all four sports teams within a few short blocks of one another. ACD was chosen by the Illitch family because of their past success of historic residential redevelopment in the city of more than 2,200 units, many of those units being available for affordable housing.More

Jim Newman will be a guest panelist at the DTE/ESD Energy Efficiency Conference and Exhibition. He is the “surprise guest” of Andy Levin, president of Levin Energy Partners and founder of Lean & Green Michigan, on the topic “PACE Financing for Any Industry.”

PACE financing, or Property Assessed Clean Energy, solves the twin problems that have long plagued comprehensive deep energy retrofits: large up-front costs and long pay-backs. In this session, Jim joins Andy to give concrete examples of how PACE helps transform buildings of many shapes, sizes and uses. Renovation of Historical Building Creates Unique Challenges

How do you renovate a historical building with a stipulation that the before and after pictures look the same?

A 1920’s era apartment complex is the latest energy renovation project The Energy Alliance Group (EAG) of Michigan is in charge of developing. Because of the building’s historical value, unique challenges had to be addressed during the planning stage before the renovation project could even move forward.

According to EAG’s Project Development Manager, Steve Payer, the building – constructed in 1929 – has a roof that leaks, an inefficient heating system, outdated lighting and windows that are all original! More
